Lose weight, lower cholesterol, significantly reduce the risk of disease, and become physically fit--in just 4 weeks.

Professional athlete-turned-firefighter Rip Esselstyn is used to responding to emergencies. By following Rip's program, everyone lost weight (some more than 20 lbs.), lowered their cholesterol (Mr. 344's dropped to 196), and improved their overall health. Now, Rip outlines his proven plan in this book. With Rip as your expert coach and motivator, you'll transform your body and lifestyle in a month. His plant-powered eating plan is based on a diet of whole foods, including whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. 2 out of 5 stars A lot of processed food, and emotional stories   July 15, 2010

I love to cook, and because I have sensitivities to diary and gluten, I've already cut out a lot of processed foods, breads and pasta from my diet and primarily cook from whole foods. I bought this book because I was interested in learning the health benefits of going vegan, and was hoping this would be a good tool. I'm disappointed in this book for many reasons.

I found most of this book filled with emotional stories. His argument that animal proteins are the building blocks for disease is no argument at all. He talks about studies that actually do argue that point, but doesn't preset the science in his own book. Because of this book, I've looked into The China Study and now I understand where Mr. Esselstyn is coming from. But it's SO annoying to me that he tries to win the readers over with stories, and by calling meat "disgusting" but barely touches on any real scientific fact.

Mr. Esselstyn contradicts himself in this book several times as he markets this diet as a whole foods, plant-based diet, yet he has an entire list of processed foods you should eat in the back of the book, including cereal, bread, and highly processed fake meat products like boca burgers. I kid you not there is a recipe for "E2 Basics Pancakes: 1 1/4 cups pancake mix; 1 3/4 cups water or milk substitute", page 158. Seriously? I need a recipe for that? He has a recipe for Peanut butter and banana sandwiches too. Isn't that a lunchbox staple?

Another contradiction is that he restricts processed foods with more than 2.5g of fat per 100 calories. But then he allows nut butters? huh?

Ok, to be fair there ARE some very good recipes in the book. I enjoyed the Red Beans and Quinoa dinner, collard green wraps, the Hummus recipe, and the Chocolate Icebox pie. It's also very helpful to have oil-free recipes for dressings and baked goods that generally have oil in them.

Another pet peeve is that while you are cooking with no oil on this diet, you are allowed to spray your pan with oil to make it nonstick and the author recommends using Pam non-stick spray. Ingredients for Pam Original are as follows: Soybean Oil (Adds a Trivial Amount of Fat)Lecithin from Soybeans, Wheat Flour, Silicon Dioxide, Natural and Artificial Flavor, TBHQ (Preservative)Propellant. I don't want all that extra junk and chemicals, I just want oil! So buy an oil sprayer on amazon.com and fill it with the oil of your choice.

Overall, I think that the low-fat, plant based, whole-foods diet that this book dances around is a good ideal lifestyle diet (I think this because I've done further reading). If you have an absolutely terrible diet now, and you don't like to put much effort into cooking than this book provides good practical advice to start turning things around in your kitchen. But, if you are already aware of the consequences of eating processed foods, and have a somewhat "clean" kitchen established in your home, this book will just make you cringe as it did me.

The Engine 2 Diet: The Texas Firefighter's 28-Day Save-Your-Life Plan that Lowers Cholesterol and Burns Away the Pounds

5 out of 5 stars Great kick-ass recipes, all while getting healthier!! What more could one want?   May 4, 2010

I can't say enough good about this book. He presents the vegan diet in a no nonsense manner and makes it alluring and easy enough for anyone to follow, but still provides some excellent recipes for us more experienced veggie-heads. I've been a vegan for a good while, so most of the information in the book is nothing new for me personally. I will say that prior to my vegan days I was a meat eater with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and a laundry list of health issues. Since going vegan everything that he states in his book rang true for me. My blood pressure and cholesterol came down to normal ranges and I am off my diabetic medications completely. Not only did I lose weight, but I noticed such benefits as smoother, clearer skin, I'm not as winded climbing up stairs and I feel over all much, much better... I have the energy of a teenager! Initially when I went vegan I was afraid that I would miss things like cheese and meat, but instead I have found a whole new world of food that tastes fabulous. I have sacrificed nothing! For anyone considering a transition to a Vegan diet, my recommendation is just "do it"! You're body will thank you for it. I've never looked back. By the way, the Engine 2 lasagna in his book is to die for!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pattern   April 20, 2010

Very entertaining and informative book. I think it would especially appeal to men who want to be healthy, but are having trouble giving up the Standard American Diet (SAD). Rip offers a great pattern for healthy lifestyle or for reversing the path a diseased body it taking. Recipes I've tried are excellent (the brownies are the BEST I've ever tasted!). Great data on the effects of eating healthy. I've already recommended this book to several people.

Thank you for this book. It was a great service. I thought I wanted to cancel and accomodations were offered. However, when that diet didn't work, my husband turned to this and it is working, BP and weight coming down significantly while still feeling satisfied, glad I didn't cancel.
